A Manual of the Art
of Bookbinding
by James B. Nicholson
designed by Massiel Estrada
I chose this book because of my love for books and my curiosity about how things work and are made. I also wanted to challenge myself with an advanced text.
The concept behind the project is ‘traditional with a twist,’ blending classic and modern elements and typefaces. I combined Adobe Jenson by Robert Slimbach for the main text, Scala Sans by Martin Majoor for captions, and Roc Grotesk by Nikola Kostić and Zoran Kostić for the cover, title page, and part openers.
The contrast between the modern, condensed, and extended Roc Grotesk, the ornaments on the cover (reminiscent of Holbein-style embossing referenced in the book) with the jacketed cloth-like case reinforces the concept as well.
