Freak Trees of the
State of New York
by The New York State College of Forestry
designed by Connie Lee
Originally published as an educational booklet in 1926, Freak Trees is a humorous collection of candid photography featuring (mostly) local examples of beloved freak trees. I decided to repackage it as a contemporary photo book that would elevate the content and appeal to adults interested in both nature and photography. Housing the beloved freak trees in a linen clothbound cover with foil stamped text and embedded photo adds a level of reverence and sophistication, and the interior pages provide each photo with enough space for appreciation. Prize winning photos are featured at larger scale and bleed off the fore-edge, making them feel more immersive; while Honorable Mentions and Trees Not Eligible are smaller and aligned to the outer margin.
